Chapter 333: Overestimating Elementary School Friendship
Chapter 333: Overestimating Elementary School Friendship
People change when they grow up.
But that simple girl I had a great relationship with, how did she grow up to be like this?
Thea Shaw couldn’t really blame her, she just felt a complex mix of emotions at that moment.
It’s as if life is full of unpredictable twists.
Lauren Blair noticed Thea’s expression: "What’s up? You haven’t been in touch with Yvonne Lane, have you? I remember you said, after she moved away, that you lost contact with her, and it’s been years since then."
"You’re a bit late on that," Thea sighed. "Just a couple of days ago, she suddenly found my contact info and reached out to me. I guessed something was up. Before I came over this morning, she asked to borrow a thousand bucks, I lent it to her, and then I hear about this as soon as I get here..."
"You actually lent her money?" Lauren was a little surprised. "Did she say when she’d pay it back?"
Thea: "I just found out she blocked me..."
Lauren: "..."
Lauren couldn’t believe Yvonne actually targeted Thea, frowning she said, "You two were so close as kids, how could she bear to con you?"
"Maybe she’s really desperate."
Honestly, a thousand bucks isn’t much to Thea right now, she wasn’t even considering going to the police.
There was no need for Thea to bother; it seemed Yvonne had run off owing quite a few people, and someone would surely report it.
One more wouldn’t make a difference.
Lauren timely suggested, "Do you want to report it?"
Thea furrowed her brow and thought for a moment: "Not for now. What’s her situation now, are the creditors from her hometown after her?"
"Seems like there are quite a few," Lauren said. "I’ve heard she’s in debt for at least a hundred grand outside, bound to cause big trouble eventually. Her family hasn’t had any major changes, don’t know what’s going on."
Lauren wasn’t clear about the situation either. Being conned out of a thousand, especially by a childhood friend, left Thea feeling a bit upset, but more than that, she wondered what Yvonne had gone through.
After a while, Mr. Shaw came back with Chloe Shaw from work, and both were quite happy to see Thea.
Mr. Shaw was carrying a pile of groceries, looked like he was planning to cook up a feast for dinner.
With their return, Lauren and Thea stopped discussing Yvonne’s matter.
Thea had a few classmates she still kept in touch with, and one of them even reached out to her about Yvonne’s situation.
Thea didn’t mention she’d been scammed by Yvonne, instead, she asked the classmate for more details.
The classmate complained that not only did Yvonne borrow money, but the most despicable part was leaving their numbers with creditors, causing them to be harassed by calls for the debts daily, making life unbearable for them.
Unlike Thea’s perspective, being both scammed and dragged into it, this classmate cursed Yvonne thoroughly, saying they had already reported it, and if Yvonne got caught, she deserved it.
Thea looked at it and could understand.
After all, those who lent money, more or less, thought of the good old days with Yvonne. Who’d have guessed she’s acting so despicably now?
It’s not like others owe her.
Thea glanced at the note left for the creditors, suddenly feeling a bad premonition.
She thought to herself, being scammed is one thing, but Yvonne wouldn’t do something so low to her, would she?
Lucky or not, soon Thea received a call from an unfamiliar number, "Is this Miss Shaw? Do you know Yvonne Lane? Yvonne owes us money, and she told us to call you to collect it!"
Thea: "..."
She really overestimated elementary school friendship.
