Chapter 22 Location of the Armory
Chapter 22 Location of the Armory
Ten days have passed since the infiltration.
For the past ten days, the fifth squad has been gathering intelligence.
However, Hanzo lived up to his reputation as a demigod in the ninja world, and he was extremely cautious in protecting war supplies.
There were no written records, no fixed transportation routes, and even the lower-ranking Rain Ninjas in charge of transportation did not know where the destination was.
They are usually only responsible for a section of the journey, and then hand over the supplies to the next group of people.
This kind of management renders traditional tracking completely ineffective, leaving only the ability to monitor these individuals for loopholes.
The rainy night was long, and the surveillance had already lasted for three hours.
The three of them lay under the eaves, chewing on dry grass roots to stay awake.
"Speaking of which..." Minato Namikaze suddenly spoke softly, breaking the silence, "If we manage to get back alive from this mission, I'd like to give you a gift."
"For whom?" Nishikawa Tetsu asked knowingly. "That transfer student? The one with the red hair?"
Minato's face was flushed even in the darkness: "Ahem... Kushina Uzumaki, she seems to be in a bad mood lately, I was thinking of getting her something."
"Send flowers," Nishikawa Tetsu suggested. "Most women can't resist flowers."
"Tacky," Fugaku Uchiha interjected coldly from the side.
"So, what are you giving me, senpai?" Nishikawa Tetsu asked. "For your fiancée—Uchiha Mikoto?"
Upon hearing this name, an unnatural softening appeared on Fugaku's usually cold and hard face.
He subconsciously touched the inner compartment of his ninja tool pouch, where a jade pendant that he hadn't yet given away was kept.
"...Uchiha women don't need fancy things." Fugaku turned his head away, looking at the rain. "The best gift is for me to become stronger and become a man who makes her proud."
"Eek—" Minato and Tetsu simultaneously let out a disdainful hiss.
"That's so typical of a straight man, senior," Nishikawa Tetsu scoffed mercilessly. "Keep those kinds of words in the family motto. Girls prefer things they can actually hold in their hands."
"Shut up! Focus on monitoring!" Fugaku said angrily.
……
The rooftop of an abandoned building is one of the few high points in the lower area. Although it is drafty and leaky, it offers an excellent view.
"Still haven't found it?"
Fugaku Uchiha leaned against the moss-covered wall, a hardened soldier's ration pill clutched in his hand, his brow furrowed. "I just used genjutsu to control a squad leader of a transport team. The only instruction he had in his memory was to put the box into the third drainage pipe."
"I also searched all the warehouses in the lower district."
Minato Namikaze returned instantly, soaking wet, shaking the water droplets off his blond hair, slightly out of breath. "No signs of large-scale hoarding were found."
Three days of fruitless efforts left the team somewhat agitated.
If the source cannot be found before supplies reach the front lines, all their previous efforts will be in vain.
"No, supplies are physical things; they don't disappear into thin air, nor do they spill into the sea."
Nishikawa Tetsu, who had been squatting on the ground staring blankly at the map of Amegakure, suddenly spoke up.
He held a pen in his hand and drew countless seemingly random circles on the map, which were all the intelligence points that Fugaku and Minato had brought back over the past three days.
"We made a mistake."
"We're looking for a 'warehouse,' a place to store things. But in the unique environment of Amegakure, that kind of thinking is wrong."
"What do you mean?" Fugaku looked at him.
"environment."
Nishikawa Tetsu pointed to the torrential rain outside, "It rains all year round in Amegakure, so what does Hanzo hoard? Explosive tags, ration pills, and ninja tools."
"Explosive tags will become ineffective when damp, soldier rations will become damp, and ninja tools will oxidize and rust."
Nishikawa Tetsu's voice gradually became more resolute, revealing a logical beauty unique to science students:
"To preserve it here for a long time, it must be kept in a huge, constant-temperature and constant-humidity dry environment."
"Minato." Nishikawa Tetsu looked up at the blond boy. "During your previous reconnaissance, did you notice any areas where the walls were relatively dry? Or, in other words, any areas where the exhaust vents emitted air at a temperature significantly higher than the ambient temperature?"
Minato Namikaze paused for a moment, his azure eyes darting around as he recalled every corner he had visited over the past few days.
Suddenly, his pupils contracted slightly.
"have!"
Shuimen pointed to an area in the northwest corner of the map.
"There was a building that looked like a sewage treatment plant, with a very dense network of pipes around it. When I passed by, it did feel warmer than other places, and there was even less moss in the corners."
"A sewage treatment plant?"
Fugaku Uchiha sneered, stood up, and a cold glint flashed in his three-tomoe eyes: "A place that harbors filth and corruption is indeed very suitable for hiding Hanzo's ambitions."
"Walk."
……
Half an hour later.
The three men lay in wait outside the so-called "sewage treatment plant".
This is a huge gray concrete building with a dilapidated appearance, surrounded by rusty barbed wire and warning signs that read "Highly Toxic and Dangerous".
Several huge chimneys were spewing out white steam, which did not seem out of place in the rainy night.
"It doesn't look like anything special," Minato Namikaze said in a low voice.
"There aren't many guards; there are only two Rain Ninjas dozing off at the entrance."
"That's a disguise."
Nishikawa Tetsu lay on a suspended pipe and took out a simple, homemade thermal imaging device, which was made using the principle of chakra sensing heat.
Through the lens, the entire building appears an eerie dark red.
"The thermal response inside the building is extremely high, which is definitely not the heat generated by treating sewage."
Nishikawa Tetsu pointed to the ground at the base of the building: "And look at those tire tracks."
In front of a hidden iron gate at the back of the building, there are several deep marks on the muddy ground.
"Although they tried to cover it up with mud, the compaction of the soil doesn't lie," Nishikawa Tetsu analyzed.
"Those deep indentations can only be made by vehicles fully loaded with heavy metals or high-density cargo. If sewage or garbage is being transported, the indentations will be much shallower."
"There are also guards."
Fugaku Uchiha activated his Sharingan, his gaze piercing through the rain and locking onto the two guards who appeared to be dozing off.
"Although those two were in relaxed postures, the flow of chakra within their bodies was very steady and active, indicating they were always ready for battle. And..."
Fugaku's gaze swept across the surrounding shadows.
"There are hidden sentries at all four corners of this building, as well as in the water tower on the roof, all of whom have chakra levels of at least Chunin."
"A sewage treatment plant, seemingly loose on the outside but tightly controlled on the inside, is also equipped with heavy-duty logistics channels and a constant temperature system."
Nishikawa Tetsu put away the instruments and gave his final conclusion:
"This is Hanzo's armory."
Having confirmed their target, the three quietly retreated to a safe distance.
"What do we do?"
"Should we just charge in?"
"no."
Fugaku Uchiha shook his head. "Since it's an armory, it must be full of barriers and traps. A direct attack would easily alert them, and if some of them are hiding inside with self-destruct mechanisms, we'll get nothing."
"Moreover, our goal is not just to destroy it, but to make it disappear 'completely' and inflict the greatest psychological blow on the front lines."
Nishikawa Tetsu pulled out a bundle of specially made detonating tags and several sealed containers of chemical reagents from his backpack.
"Since it's a constant-temperature, sealed environment, it's a natural pressure cooker."
Nishikawa Tetsu looked at the building as if it were a giant experimental sample.
"We don't need to go in and fight them. We just need to find the vent that keeps things dry and then send our gift in."
"As long as the ventilation system draws these gifts into the warehouse..."
Nishikawa Tetsu made an explosion gesture, his eyes looking particularly dangerous in the darkness:
"Whether it's dust, poison gas, or detonating tags."
"In that enclosed space, everything becomes art of destruction."
"Tonight, let Amegakure hear a sound."
